Edgewater Beach & Golf Resort played host to Campus Crusade for Christ’s annual Big Break outreach conferences this year from February 28, 2010 to April 3, 2010. Exceeding the expected 2,500 students, a total of 3,086 students from across the country spent their spring breaks attending one of the five weeklong events held during this time frame. Edgewater set the stage for these spring breakers to accomplish their goal of packing meals for one million Haitian earthquake victims. Campus Crusade for Christ exceeded their goal and prepared a total 1,009,368 meals for the people of Haiti.
“We have been privileged to host Campus Crusade’s events since the late 1990s,” said Paul Wohlford, vice president of sales and marketing for The Resort Collection. “This year, it was a special honor to have our resort be ground zero for this amazing and important project to help the people of Haiti who have been devastated by this disaster.”
Campus Crusade for Christ, a worldwide, interdenominational Christian ministry, partnered with Kids Against Hunger and the Global Aid Network (GAiN) to pack and ship the million meals to Haiti. Kids Against Hunger has been responsible for preparing more than 120 million meals that have been distributed in 60 countries in the last decade. Global Aid Network, the relief and development arm of Campus Crusade for Christ International, responded immediately to the earthquake, distributing more than one million pre-positioned meals, and has further plans to send medical teams into the country.
Each afternoon, students participating in Big Break brought their friends to a packing party where 100,000 meals were prepared. The students combined four ingredients to create a highly nutritious, vitamin-fortified soy-rice mix. When cooked with six cups of water, each meal-mix swells fourteen times in size to form a tasty casserole or porridge. The million meals the students packed filled six tractor-trailer trucks.
“We have enjoyed working with the staff at Edgewater Beach & Golf Resort for ten years,” said Darrell Arthurs, director of conference services for the national team of Campus Crusade for Christ. “From the sales staff to the conference services employees, their willingness to serve us has been a blessing to our ministry and to thousands of students from all over the country throughout the last decade.”
