The Written Word

me + vie: A Summer with Anne Hunter – My Beach Re-Boot

I’m from a Southern family. When we were kids, my brother would call me a Yankee to ruffle my feathers. I think he was on to something, since June 1 marks my one-year anniversary of being a New Yorker.

Manhattan is not for the faint of heart and my first full winter there was a long one, so, this summer I’m taking a three-month sabbatical from city life to write for Lisa Burwell and VIE Magazine in my hometown of Scenic Highway 30-A. Thank you, VIE!

These beaches are part of my southern heritage; they are my roots. My Grandmother Willie taught Hank Williams, Sr., to read and write in a one-room schoolhouse just two hours north of here and I’ve been swimming these emerald waters since I was a toddler.

30A is Small Town USA with a Euro flair. We are new-urbanites, a whole new breed of people. Smart, savvy, and self-aware, we moved here to live, work, and play on the most beautiful beaches in the world. Every day is an episode of Cheers. Everybody knows your name and 30A is one big extended family that stretches for eighteen miles. We are architects, athletes, designers, writers, singers, painters, photographers, publishers, dancers, chefs, entertainers, entrepreneurs, healers, and creators of all kinds.

New York may be my place for now, but 30A has my roots. So while I’m here and writing for VIE, I think a Beach Re-Boot to re-root is just what the doctor ordered. I’m looking for my friends, some fitness, some health, some fun, and some sun before buckling down for my second Manhattan winter.

I am sure VIE Magazine is happy to have Anne Hunter writing and blogging for them this summer of 2013. Her writing is smart, insightful and witty. As a long time resident of Scenic Highway 30A in NW Florida and now a part time resident of New York City, Anne will bring a fresh and unique perspective to the creative arts, fitness and cuisine.

Anne is a long time dear friend of mine and I am looking forward to photographing her beach and fitness re-boot journey this summer. It will be fun and I’m sure it will inspire me to get in better shape myself.
