Modern Adornments, an Architect’s Perspective
Monday, August 30th, 2010
Newbill Collection By The Sea will host award winning jewelry designer and practicing architect, Elizabeth Baird on Labor Day weekend, September 3-4 at the gallery in Ruskin Place Artist Colony. Baird will be the guest artist for First Friday Art Walk from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on September 3rd and will be present on Saturday, September 4th from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. during the jewelry trunk show to discuss her one-of-a kind pieces.
Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, now living and working in Austin Texas, Baird recently received the award for “Creativity and Ingenuity” at the Austin Shines Jewelry Competition. Baird approaches jewelry design with formal training in architecture, holding both a Bachelors and Masters degrees in the discipline, along with a love of fashion. She is currently practicing architecture while simultaneously pursuing a parallel career in jewelry design. According to Baird, “This is a natural progression as the two arts embody so many of the same fundamental principles. Issues of proportion, materiality, fabrication, and even movement intertwine the two disciplines, informing my design approach at two very different scales.” Further explaining, Baird says, “Although a design for a building sometimes takes years to be realized, the jewelry design outlet allows a more immediate design exploration to be completed, and later applied at the building scale if desired.”
Baird’s current jewelry collection, which will be presented during the trunk show, is comprised of a series of pieces that explore the juxtaposition of the materiality of hard and soft. Commenting on her work, “This contrast is referenced in the rigidity of the solid metal that has been sculpted or folded into softer forms, in the compositions of heavy chain and hardware against the lightness of wool felt, as well as in the coldness of sheet metal folding around the warmth of the soft textures.”
Gallery owner Annette Newbill Trujillo says, “We are so pleased to feature Elizabeth Baird’s fresh, modern and leading edge wearable art. An architect’s perspective always seems to influence design with structural components that have a lot of surprising interaction. Her combination of wool felt with sterling is innovative and quite refreshing.”
Newbill Collection By The Sea, located at 309 Ruskin Place, is in its 18th year in Ruskin Place Artist Colony in Seaside. The gallery will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
